Quality, limits and potential of acrylic fabric

Weight, tensile strength, resistance to expansion and tearing, water column, water repellency, light and weather resistance, performance in response to solar energy, and other characteristics are measured with high-performance instruments and must comply with specific international standards. Due to the very nature of the fiber, once installed on structures, the fabrics may exhibit small irregularities, sometimes mistakenly considered imperfections. Below, we will illustrate in detail some of the effects that the fabric may exhibit. These effects are due to the intrinsic characteristics of the fiber, the fabric, and the awning itself and cannot be considered defects. As part of the fiber's technical characteristics, they are present not only on TEMPOTEST® fabrics, but on all fabrics on the market. The intensity of these phenomena can be limited with proper installation. It is important to reiterate that none of the aesthetic imperfections that may occur and which will be described compromise the value of the fabric, its performance, or make it unsuitable for the aforementioned functions of UV protection, energy saving, or privacy.

  • Waviness near the seams

    Continuous rolling and unrolling of the fabric can cause overtension in the seam area, where the fabrics overlap and are therefore thicker. This overtension creates undulations in the areas adjacent to the seam. This phenomenon can be amplified by humidity and may be more or less noticeable depending on the color or different lighting conditions. The formation of undulations becomes more likely as the awning grows in size or as the fabric is subjected to increased tension. These are also known as embossing.

  • Waviness in the center of the cloth or honeycomb

    It's possible that the fabric may undergo slight shifts when rolling and unrolling an awning. These shifts, over time, cause some undulations that take on a honeycomb shape. The more layers of fabric wound on the roller, i.e., the greater the awning's protrusion, the greater the likelihood that the fabric will shift during opening and closing, and therefore some of these undulations will form. If the fabric is rolled up while still wet, these phenomena will be accentuated. Rolling the awning only when it's dry also prevents the formation of an environment suitable for mold growth, a phenomenon that can occur when organic dirt (pollen, tree resin, smog, etc.) is present on the awning, which becomes a breeding ground for mold, especially in hot, humid, and poorly ventilated environments.

  • Waviness at the edges of the cloth

    In a standard awning, the fabric is held in tension simply by the roller and the extension bar. As a result, the tension that develops on the fabric may not be evenly distributed, causing it to unevenly discharge along the edges. This phenomenon tends to worsen when the awning is rolled up wet after being exposed to rain. We recommend letting the awning fabric dry before rolling it up again.

  • Compression and winding folds

    These creases can form during the manufacturing or assembly of very large awnings. In light colors, the phenomenon can be amplified, resulting in darker color effects on the surface, to the side of the crease, that can appear dirty. Handling the fabric can accentuate this imperfection over time. Many installers and retailers now adopt transport and assembly techniques for large awnings that minimize the possibility of these unsightly effects. However, creases are often still unavoidable for ready-made fabrics intended for awnings or structures longer than 6 meters.

  • Lines or Writing and “Chalk” Effect

    The finishing products generally used to ensure the performance of sunscreen fabrics can cause some light-colored streaks. These streaks, also known as "writing effects," are formed due to handling during the manufacturing and assembly of the fabric. This effect is more visible on medium-intensity colors.

  • Micro holes in the hoods

    Acrylic fabric is treated with a special finish that, in addition to ensuring its renowned technical characteristics, makes it rigid and resilient. These characteristics allow the fabric to remain taut during exposure when used in traditional awnings. However, when used for canopies, this type of fabric can cause microholes to form at the folds caused by the constant mechanical action of opening and closing.
